Bow-Owch! – Oily Pet Care

A crazy 68% of U.S. households, or about 85 million families, own a pet, according to the 2017-2018 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). I am not surprised, because we love us some animals and have 2 dogs of our own, a Corgi named Zoey and a Chihuahua Dachshund mix named Stewie (pictured in the main photo).

The goal for us in using essential oils, and CBD oil, is to create a healthier happier lifestyle for our family using non-toxic products. If we use these magic potions on ourselves and our family members, why wouldn’t we extend that love to the littlest members, our furry kids the pets. Luckily we can!

Most oils are safe to use on and around your pets, but it is important to dilute essential oils when using them on our littles and avoid applying oil around the animal’s nose, eyes and genital areas. Take a look at the dilution guide below for reference and always start low and slow with introducing a new oil to your pet.

Dilution Ratios (1).png

Young Living even has their own line of pet products and oil blends specifically formulated for what your pet needs. The Animal Scents line. Bonus! … A portion of all proceeds from Animal Scents products goes to support Vital Ground, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the habitat of grizzly bears and other wide-roaming wildlife. Rarr!

A few reasons you may need oils in your pets’ life:

Anxiety:

We touched on this in our “Calm Down Dawg” post about CBD oil and your pets, however there are great EOs you can use to help as well. On high anxiety days like the 4th of July or New Years Eve, or even every morning if your pet has separation anxiety, arm them with a coat of calming oil. Take a couple drops of essential oil mixed with coconut oil in your hands and rub it behind their ears and along their coat. You may also apply this mixture to the bottoms of their paws. The coconut oil is healthy for their fur and the EO will help calm them during fireworks etc.

**The Animal Scents line has an oil called T Away formulated for this exact reason. It is a blend of 20+ calming and happy oils to help your furry friend get through those moments of anxiety. Apply as stated above.

**If you have Lavender on hand, that is a simple oil that can help big time. Diffuse it in the main room to give your little one a sense of calm throughout the day.

Stinky Breath:

We love them, but don’t necessarily want their kisses all the time cuz PEE-YEW that’s stinky! There are several ways you can combat this problem using essential oils and YL products.

Oil in their water –  Put a drop or two of oil in their water dish so they can lap it up and tame that breath. The two best oils to use for this are Peppermint and Orange.

Toothpaste – All of Young Living’s toothpaste options are safe to use on your pet. I recommend the Thieves Aromabright Toothpaste. Apply directly with a finger brush (if your animal will let you).

Mouth Spray – DIY a mouth spray with the following recipe: 4oz glass spray bottle, 1 cap full of YL’s Fresh Essence Mouthwash, 1 drop of Peppermint or Orange and fill to the top with distilled water.

Pests:

Parasites – These pests can infest your pet’s intestines and do a number on their system. Animal Scents ParaGize is a blend of Ginger, Spearmint, Peppermint, Lemongrass and others to help support your animal’s digestive system and keep it above the wellness line. Take 1 or two drops with a carrier oil and rub it on your pet’s stomach in a clockwise fashion. Make sure to dilute for smaller species/animals.

Fleas / Ticks / Bugs – Let your pet roam free outside with the knowledge that they are protected from irritating pests with the Animal Scents blend RepelAroma. This blend is similar to what you would use for your own bug spray. Made with Citronella, Idaho Tansy, Palo Santo, and Tea Tree oils you can either make a spray to have handy or rub on their coat with 2-4 drops and a carrier oil. If you are comfortable with it you can also add a couple drops to their water bowl and allow them to drink the oils.

Wound Care:

Our four legged pals may get a little adventurous or rough house around and end up with a cut or scratch that needs attention. The last three oils in the Animal Scents oil line are made to work together in a 3-part-system to help support the healing of wounds on your animal. Make sure to wait a few minutes between each application of oil on your pet. Let the body absorb the previous oil and watch for any reaction before moving onto the next.

  1. PuriClean helps with purifying and cleansing the wound area to prep it for healing. It is made with oils such as Lemongrass, Cistus, Tea Tree and Pachouli to name a few. Pop a roller top onto the bottle to apply directly to the area of concern for a larger pet or drop 1-2 drops in your hand with a carrier oil to apply on those that need dilution. You can also add 8-10 drops in a 1 oz spray bottle with distilled water for a quick skin-cleansing spritz.
  2. InfectAway does exactly what the name says! This blend helps to keep harmful infections at bay and supports a healthy recovery. You will find oils like Myrrh, Palo Santo, and Octotea in this blend, along with a few other power house oils. You can use 1-2 drops topically on the area after you apply PuriClean or make another spray bottle with the same dilution ratio as stated above.
  3. MendWell is the last oil to apply. It will help with proper blood flow to the wound, which we know is key to the healing process. This blend includes oils like Lavender, Hyssop, Hinoki, Frankincense and Myrrh. Application is the same as before. You can either apply directly via a roller top, dilute in your hand, or you can make your own spray.

And More!

The love that Young Living has for your pets doesn’t end there. There are several other animal centric products that they carry. All non-toxic so you can make sure your little buddy has only the best. These products include dental chews, cat treats, shampoo and ointment.

**Life hack – This ointment is amazing for humans as well. I use it on my dry/cracked hands and it’s a lifesaver. It’s a great alternative to the regular line rose ointment which is a little pricer.

In your quest for doing what is best for your pet, we hope that you consider trying these all natural products. You can purchase the Animal Scents line through your Young Living wholesale account (if you have one) or contact us directly to sign up for one today!

CBD For Your Pets

I know from personal experience that our furry friends can feel much less like pets and more like children. They are a part of our family. So when we see them going through anxiety, for any reason, it breaks our heart and we want to do everything we can to help.

Our Corgi, Zoey, went through a really hard separation anxiety period when her best bud, and our first dog Curby passed away. She took Curby being gone reallllly hard and could not stand to be alone when we had to leave for work. She would destroy anything in her path to find someone to be with. On TWO different occasions she ripped through metal chicken wire that I had put over the gate of our back yard, reinforced with zip ties. She shredded right through it in an anxiety filled fit and ran off down the street. We tried a few different methods of calming her, including the anxiety collars you see in the stores and nothing seemed to work. In fact, she ate the collar! Finally we ended up caving and got her another dog pal to keep her company. Enter Stewie into our lives. A couple years later I came across a few different studies about the benefits that people enjoy from CBD and how they could also help animals. It was such a relief to find a natural method to help Zoey with her anxiety, and from our experience, it really works!

ZOEY.png

Dosing can be tricky, but method is not. Start by adding just a few drops of Hemp Extract Oil on a treat, let it soak in, then give it to your pet. No Problem! Serving size is what can be tricky, because even humans will react differently to different doses of CBD. Start by giving 3-5 drops on a daily basis, going up to 10 drops for large doses needed before traveling, fireworks, being home alone, or any other anxiety triggering time. (Use discretion based on the size of your pet.) If you are needing to save your precious CBD oil for yourself, your furry loved ones will get the benefit in non daily doses, but you might miss out on the benefits from extended CBD use including healthy coat, cancer prevention, arthritic pain relief and a reduction in inflammation.

As always I want the best for myself and my family so we use Botana Hemp products. The Spygric process that Botana uses results in the purest extract on the market, making sure you get the benefit of ALL the cannabinoids in the plant.

Elevate Your Frequency

When you hear “the power of positive thinking” what do you think about? Some people are very invested in this philosophy and live by it, more power to you! Others are hesitant to play too much into it, I hear you too! Let me break it down into something simple everyone can get behind.

Everything is made of energy, we are no different.  That energy can be physically measured in MegaHertz (MHz) and is basically a measurement of how quickly our cells can regenerate in our bodies. Scientific studies have shown that in order for our bodies to stay healthy we need to stay above 58MHz. Disease begins when a body is at 58MHz, cancer happens at 42MHz and death begins at 25MHz. A typical healthy body will have a frequency range of about 67MHz to 78MHz.

**Additional info on the body’s frequency (quoted below) as well as amazing information on Biofeedback found here: https://bit.ly/2DlQtig

“THE HEALTHY BODY

Genius Brain Frequency 80–82 MHz
Brain Frequency Range 72–90 MHz
Normal Brain Frequency 72 MHz
Human Body 62–78 MHz
Human Body from Neck up 72–78 MHz
Human Body from Neck down 60–68 MHz

Thyroid and Parathyroid glands 62–68 MHz
Thymus gland 65–68 MHz
Heart is 67–70 MHz
Lungs 58–65 MHz
Liver 55–60 MHz
Pancreas 60–80 MHz

THE DISEASED BODY

Colds and the Flu start at 57–60 MHz
Disease starts at 58 MHz
Candida overgrowth starts at 55 MHz
Receptive to Epstein Barr at 52 MHz
Receptive to Cancer at 42 MHz
Death begins at 25 MHz

FOODS

Fresh Foods 20–27 Hz
Fresh Herbs 20–27 Hz
Dried Foods 15–22 Hz
Dried Herbs 15–22 Hz
Processed/Canned Food Zero Hz”

There are so many things throughout the day that will effect your frequency levels, What you eat, what you think, what you touch etc. For example, negative thoughts have been found to decrease the energy frequencies in your body while saying a prayer can increase them. They have even gotten pretty specific with it, saying that a negative thought decreases your frequencies by as much as  -12MHz while a prayer can increase it by +15MHz. Just touching a cigarette was shown to decrease by -17MHz and smoking one was a whopping -23MHz. All the more reason to put those down Ya’ll!

So it would benefit us all to increase those frequencies right?! I talk a lot about “Staying above the wellness line.” How do we do that?

To combat the inevitable negatives you will come into contact with during the day you need to be conscience of the positives you can accumulate along the way. Eating healthy foods (up to +27), surrounding yourself with positive people and using essential oils as a few examples.

Essential oils have the highest frequencies of any natural substance studied, with ranges from 46MHz all the way to 580MHz! You can use essential oils topically, aromatically, or internally to help support your body’s frequency.

See the chart below for measurements (in MegaHertz) of several Young Living oils.

YL EO Frequency

Negative thoughts sometimes are hard to put aside 100% so if you find yourself in that funk, catch it, stop it, and think about something that makes you smile. You have a new reason to do so! Easier said than done I am sure, so here are a few EO suggestions that help support a happy you.

The ABC’s of CBD

I will be talking at great length as we go along about Botana CBD products. But I realized after my first post about CBD, that maybe I need to take a step back and explain this medicinal compound a little more.

Most of the major discoveries involving cannabis have come to light over the last 30 years or so. While studying the effects of THC and CBD, researchers uncovered the receptors in our body that bond to these cannabinoids, and labeled them CB1 and CB2. The interaction between the cannabinoids in cannabis and these receptors led to the much larger discovery of the endocannabinoid system. Long story short, this is the most under appreciated system in the human body. Other than insects, every living plant or animal has an endocannabinoid system made for processing these compounds, both from outside plants and naturally within our bodies.

The endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining homeostasis within the human body. This system is responsible for mental and physiological processes including memory, higher cognition, motor coordination, appetite control, emotional support, maintaining healthy bone density, and naturally preventing diabetes. There is still a tremendous amount of research that needs to be done on this system, as well as the compounds that interact with it.

One thing we do  know right now is that there are higher amounts of CB1 receptors in the brain, which typically bind to THC more easily. This is the compound that gives people the euphoric “high”. CB2 receptors are found more generally throughout the body, specifically the immune and gastrointestinal system. CB2 receptors also tend to bond easily with CBD. This could be the reason CBD has such a wide spectrum of medicinal uses within our bodies. New research indicates there might also be a CB3 receptor! As industry regulation eases, we will be able to research this system within our bodies more and more, as well as understand how they interact with different compounds.  Imagine what could it mean to the future understanding of the health of our bodies!

While we will probably discover more of these natural cannabinoids the more we research, for now the most plentiful source of cannabinoids is found within the cannabis plant.

CBD Farm

There are 113 Cannabinoids in cannabis. Many are in very small trace amounts, and most have not had the funding (or Government clearance) to be studied for their full medical benefit. Some of the most notable would be of course THC and CBD. But CBN is being identified as the cannabinoid responsible for the sleepy sensation, or CBG as the potential cannabinoid for treatment of gastrointestinal issues. Being able to isolate and studies these compounds could lead to a number of new treatments.

Without a doubt, the most medicinal compound that we know of at this time is CBD. It has virtually no side effects (might make you tired) and has a super long list of benefits including,  but not limited to:

  1. Antibacterial
  2. Inhibits cancer cell growth
  3. Neuro-protective
  4. Promotes bone growth
  5. Reduces seizures and convulsions
  6. Reduces blood sugar levels
  7. Reduces function in the immune system
  8. Reduces inflammation
  9. Reduces risk of artery blockage
  10. Reduces small intestine contractions
  11. Relieves pain
  12. Relieves anxiety
  13. Slows bacterial growth
  14. Suppresses muscle spasms
  15. Tranquilizing
  16. Treats psoriasis
  17. Vasorelaxant

An Apple A Day…

The season has begun where the sniffles, coughing and the dreaded flu creep into your home. If you are like us and have little ones then you are on extra high alert from the germs they bring home with them from school. How do we guard against the winter woes and make sure we make it to Christmas without a sick day?

In our house we thrive on all things Thieves, ingest cold fighting oils and Ningxia Red antioxidant drink as well as use our Immunity Roller daily.

DSC_1633.jpg*Thieves Starter Kit *

At the first sign of sniffles I start up the diffuser in our main common area of the house and I keep that sucker puffing away all day. I pair Thieves oil with a few other immune boosting oils such as Frankincense, Tee Tree and Lemon. You can also use Purification and Citrus Fresh to cleanse the air and help the unwanted germs from spreading.

The next step in our regimen is ingesting cold fighting Vitality Line oils like Thieves, Oregano & Frankincense. I keep empty veggie capsules on hand always and fill one capsule with 2-3 drops essential oil and a dab of carrier oil before swallowing. *I do not recommend that kids ingest oils in this manner.  Tip: If you pre-make your capsules, throw them in the freezer to keep them from leaking. Another way I ingest oils is by putting Thieves, Lemon and Frankincense in my hot tea or coffee grounds. 1 drop of each in a hot steamy cup is my go-to when I feel that scratch at the back of my throat.

a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor..png

Ningxia Red is an antioxidant powerhouse of a drink from Young Living. Talk about giving your immune system a leg up! It is made from nutrient-rich wolfberry puree, superfruit juices, and pure essential oils like Tangerine, Lemon and Orange. You only need a small shot of Ningxia each morning for it to do it’s job. Tip: put it in the fridge to make it even tastier. If you have the single packets, throw a straw in the top and your kids will have a new favorite healthy treat.

NINGXIA RED (2).png

I love my oil rollers, for everything, but the one I make sure that I ALWAYS have on hand is my immunity roller. We use this roller daily, not only during times of sickness but also during times of health, to continue supporting our bodies. We apply the roller to the back of our necks, down along our spines, and on the bottom of our feet morning and night. If our son will be around other kids at the playground or going to a party we will apply right before as well.

Here are a couple roller recipes that we use to keep healthy or get over the bug quick:

Adult Immunity Roller (Starter Kit Oils):

10 Drops Thieves

10 Drops Frankincense

5 Drops Lemon

5 Drops Lavender

Kids Immunity Roller:

5 Drops Tee Tree – Outside the Starter Kit

4 Drops Frankincense

3 Drops Lemon

3 Drops Lavender

*When your roller has Lemon in it make sure that if you plan on going outside, you only apply on covered areas of skin. Lemon oil is photosensitive and can irritate your skin when exposed to sunlight.

Last but not least, make sure you are wiping down anything and everything with Thieves Household Cleaner to stop that sickness in it’s tracks and keep it away from your family this season.

Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Ancient Frankincense

When I woke up this morning, I opened my bible app and was about to pick up where I left off. I had just finished the New Testament and recently started over with the Old Testament, when a certain passage I had read recently called back to me, here it is the from Genesis 1:29…

“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

You may have different opinions about the Bible than I do, but it’s very hard to dispute that it does not have extremely accurate detail about how our ancestors used a number of different plants. From anointing to healing, they had a very good understanding of how every plant could be used. I wanted to cover plants and oils from this perspective, because as my interest has grown in plant healing, so has my interest in the history of these plants. I think a really great spot to start would be with one of the most famous spices in the entire bible:DSC_3466

“Incense” is mentioned over 100 times in the bible, and it is often assumed to imply frankincense along with myrrh and other spices. However within the King James Bible, frankincense specifically appears 17 times. Here a few of the major examples:

  1. It was most famously brought to Jesus at his birth along with Myrrh and Gold as gifts from the Three Wise Men.
  2. God instructed Moses to take up Frankincense and other sweet spices, and to make a perfume that could be used inside the tabernacle for the congregation.
  3. During this time period Jews were to offer sacrifices to God in the Temples. Before anything could be offered, it had to have Frankincense poured onto it.

Frankincense is not only a “Holy Oil.” It has a lot of medicinal properties to it as well. One of the biggest uses comes when you just need some mental peace.

Frank calm

You can use Frankincense in varying ways to help with many different ailments. Take it internally by filling veggie capsules with Frank and carrier oil. Put it on topically with carrier oil in a roller bottle or neat on your big toes. Diffuse it and inhale it aromatically. It is very versatile.

Frank uses

We have been so blessed to see the positive effects from this oil personally in our lives.  **I highly suggest further researching the benefits of this oil. Start here: https://www.healthline.com/health/cancer/frankincense-and-cancer#benefits

One of our next oil purchases is to get Sacred Frankincense. Sacred Frankincense is regarded as one of the rarest and most sought-after aromatics in existence. Young Living’s Sacred Frank is the first Omani Frankincense to be available to those outside of the Saudi royals and the privileged Oman.

There are a few differences between Sacred Frankincense and regular Frankincense:

  1. The geography of the trees, Frankincense from the Boswellia Carterii tree grown in Somalia and Sacred Frankincense coming from the Boswellia Sacra tree in Oman. The Boswellia Sacra tree is believed to be the same ancient species that was given to Jesus.
  2. The difference in monoterpenes and a-pinenes. Regular Frankincense has upwards of 90% monoterpenes, and 35-45% a-pinenes. Sacred Frankincense has up to 93% monoterpenes, but a-pinenes is upwards of 85%. A-pinenes are a high influencer in bronchial support and your body’s inflammatory response. Therefore, you will find better results with Sacred Frank in those two areas specifically.
  3. Many use Sacred Frankincense in meditation and spiritual connection because it has a higher frequency than regular Frankincense.

*This month (November) if you spend $300 on Essential Rewards you will receive Sacred Frankincense, Myrrh, Christmas Spirit, Northern Lights Black Spruce, Nutmeg Vitality and a Christmas ornament diffuser for FREE. Message us for details.

Selling Your Home The Oily Way

Preston and I are a Real Estate duo in Arizona. Somehow we haven’t gotten sick of each other yet! It’s so fun for us to share our passion for what we do, whether it be in Real Estate or oils. So whenever those worlds cross over, it’s extra exciting for us nerds. This crossover post is all about selling your home and how a simple smell in the diffuser may increase your chances of catching that buyer.

rose flower

Smells can influence action in a person. You smell the floral scents in the grocery store and may just run over and pick up a dozen roses for your kitchen. Or a whiff of something from the bakery will have fresh rolls in your basket in no time. Smells from your past can also immediately drift you into a nostalgic haze. What people think of first when planning an Open House is baking fresh chocolate chip cookies in the oven so the house feels like home when buyers walk in.

Contrary to that popular belief, cookies are not the best way to woo via the nose.  A study by Spangenberg, Sprott and Zidansek (2012) found that in fact, simple scents are the most effective way to get people to open their wallets and spend $$$$. The smell of cookies can be complicated to your olfactory senses by including many different scents all at once such as chocolate, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon etc. This study shows that just by infusing a retail store with the simple scent of Orange, sales increased by 20%!orangeArmed with that knowledge, Preston and I always bring our diffuser with us to every Open House. We diffuse Orange Essential Oil the most but we also like to try other citrus scents like Lemon (with 1 drop peppermint to make it smell like a spa). This does more than just help with the atmosphere. It can also eliminate other smells in the house that may not be too pleasant to incoming buyers ex) pets or the stale smell of a vacant home. If you are living in your home while trying to sell it, we definitely recommend investing in a diffuser and turning it on right before you know there will be a showing. We lend out diffusers to our clients for this use all the time. DSC_1830Ok so Orange Oil is no replacement for an actual Realtor doing a great job {give us a call 😉 }  but it can definitely give you a helpful little edge over the other houses for sale on the block.

Happy selling ya’ll!
